What The Heck Should I Post?!!
You’ve got your coffee and emptied your inbox. You’ve walked the dog and filled, then emptied, your cart. You tap your fingers aimlessly. You close your eyes but when you open them it’s still just staring back at you. Blink. Blink. Blink. Waiting. Blink. Blink. Blink. The curser flashes on the empty page as though it’s mocking you.
Some days creativity flows like butter melting through hot kernels - easy and flowing. Sadly, you don’t often get buttered popcorn everyday. So when the blank page has you stumped - pull out these secret weapons to get the butter melting.
STEP 1: GET PRODUCTIVE
Check out your analytics and take note of your top three performing posts with the most engagement. Enquire why? Was it your tone of voice? What kind of media did you share? Were you in the photo or video?
Now look at the bottom performing posts and do the same. What was your opening line? Was the point of your post clear? Was the photo/video engaging?
STEP 2: GET IN FLOW
In her book Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, our girl Liz Gilbert deep dives into the creative process. She argues, a large part of creating is getting out of our own way and relaxing into a state of ‘flow’. For this, go analogue! Start by unrolling a sexy, blank new piece of butcher’s paper to brainstorm without borders! Splay out coloured textas and do a messy brain dump and mind-map ideas from there.
Often, a blank page can feel more inspiring than a blank screen. “With writing, instead of a single keystroke, each letter requires multiple strokes. By spending more time on each letter and word, your brain has more of an opportunity to process what you're writing. In essence, you're giving yourself more time for creative ideas to percolate.” (1)
If you’re still struggling, dive into a stack of your favourite books and hunt through the juicy underlined paragraphs for a quote that grabs you. You’ll know it’s the right one when you can begin to riff on it with ease.
3. GET CURIOUS
Next ask yourself a series of questions to get into the minds of your peeps:
Where’s their head at today? (Monday vs. Friday is a very different vibe)
What lessons have you learned recently?
What would surprise someone about your biz?
What is their biggest worry right now (that you could easily solve?)
From there it’s about finding the right photo to go with your post + crafting a caption that’s real talk. No BS. No fluff. Just honesty + realness.
*The Catch - (hehe!) Just tag me in your caption to say thanks! (And obvi so I can give you some big love back!)
There you go boo! Pin it! Flag it! Save it! Or, if you’re struggling to find your creative mojo today, have at the freebie above right now!
May the creative forces be with you. 🤟🏼
Psst - When the butter starts melting - try not to get the keyboard all greasy would ya?
